This course will be an intermediate study of the 40 hadith collected by al-Imam al-Nawawi. The lectures will summarize the key points found in the major works based on this text. Upon completion of the work, students will take a comprehensive exam of the 40 hadith which will focus on the understanding of related core concepts. A considerable amount of focus will be placed on understanding the traditions in the Arabic language.

Shāfi῾ī Fiqh of Uterine Bleeding

In this course, students will learn the rulings governing different types of uterine bleeding according to the Shāfi῾ī school of jurisprudence. The course will cover issues regarding ḥayḍ (menstruation), nifās (post natal bleeding) and Istiḥāḍah (irregular bleeding) and how these affect the validity of a woman’s worships as well as how to calculate the beginning and end of each type of bleeding. Classes will primarily be based on the text Matn Abī Shujā῾ and its commentary Ḥāshiyah al-Bājūrī ‘alā Sharḥ Ibn Qāsim al-Ghizzy ῾alā Matn Abī Shujā῾ in addition to other texts and notes.
